About Cline

Cline is an open-source AI coding agent that works in VS Code, the terminal, and embedded products through its SDK. It helps developers understand codebases, refactor projects, run commands, and automate recurring workflows.

The agent supports Plan and Act modes, coordinated multi-file edits, linter-aware fixes, diffs, checkpoints, and one-click undo. It can use Claude, GPT, Gemini, local Ollama or LM Studio models, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints with a bring-your-own-key or bring-your-own-weights setup.

Cline runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Its CLI can be installed with npm and used in scripts, cron jobs, CI pipelines, and integrations with MCP servers, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Linear, GitHub Actions, and GitLab.

Highlights

  • Open-source agent runtime under the Apache 2.0 license
  • VS Code extension, terminal CLI, and SDK
  • Plan and Act modes with approval controls
  • MCP and plugin support for custom tools and lifecycle hooks
  • Multi-agent teams and scheduled automations

Solid but not magic. Works great on greenfield projects; on our legacy monorepo it gets lost and needs a lot of hand-holding. Still worth trying.
