Codex CLI now leaves a self-updating background daemon running by default; here's the opt-out
Since 0.157.0, opening codex starts codex app-server --managed-daemon, copies a ~374MB package into ~/.codex/packages, and runs an hourly updater that outlives your terminal; the opt-in request hit the HN front page and OpenAI hasn't changed the default yet. To turn it off, run codex features disable daemon_auto_start, then codex app-server daemon stop and pkill -f 'app-server daemon pid-update-loop', since stop leaves the updater running.
